If you ask me to define myself down to an activity, I would be hard pressed to say anything other than skiing. But about a year ago, I discovered that I can ALMOST get the same adrenaline high that comes with charging a downhill snow chute right here in Huntsville at Monte Sano State Park–on a Mountain Bike.

Sunday festival

This Sunday bring your Fat Tires and Camel Backs up to Monte Sano for the biggest mountain biking event of the fall, the Monte Sano Fat Tire Fall Scavenger Hunt and Picnic! Whether you’d like to roll quietly along the Bucca Family Trail, or risk your collar bones along Warpath Ridge, this day had something for every rider.

The day officially starts at noon, so you have time to make your Mother proud at church and still get in some outdoor time with your other Mother–Earth.

The festival will center geographically around the Pavilion, and when you get hungry that is where you’ll find the food. The weather is looking like highs in the 60s, so you won’t get a better day this fall to ride. A digital photo scavenger hunt with spread out destinations and a limited time frame will challenge not only your fitness and machinery, but also your “Strategery.”

Scott Bicycles will also be hosting a demo day in the park, so you can test out their steeds. I ride a Scott Scale 29 Comp and I can honestly say that Scott makes sweet rides. Come see for yourself.

Backyard Beauty

I grew up here and never knew it, but Monte Sano has some of the most highly regarded single track Mountain Bike Trails in the Southeast. If you train at Monte Sano, you can ride anywhere. Guys like Matt DeWitt, Tim Barnack, and Scott Schlappman and other have been tweaking the trails for years, and they’ve created a thing of beauty. Thank you guys for your hard work.
