Barbecue, Bar-B-Que, BBQ, however you spell it, the endless variations of sauces, smokers, and grills means the title of “best” bar-b-que is hotly contested. So much depends on personal preference (wet or dry, standalone or sauced, mild or eye-wateringly hot) that you can hardly find two people who agree. That said, I have my favorite spots, and in light of upcoming Labor Day celebrations, I’d like to share them with you.
My favorite bar-b-que joints meet the following criteria:
- The meat is fall-apart tender
- The meat is well seasoned and flavorful, requiring no sauce to be enjoyed
- The sides are fresh and well put together
With those criteria in mind, these are my top three go-to places for bar-b-que in Huntsville.
New Market BBQ
Located a bit off the beaten path, New Market BBQ offers tender, flavorful meat and a distinctive “smac’n’cheese” which is smoked in the smoker alongside the meat (as are their baked beans.) Open just Friday-Sunday, they accept call in orders and offer catering.
Perfect for:
- A relaxing lunch or dinner at the old fashioned counter or outdoor picnic tables
- Picking up food for your family or event, just call ahead and it’s ready when you are
EAT AT NEW MARKET BBQ
Hours: Friday-Saturday 11:00 am – 7:00 pm
Sunday: 11:00 am – 4:00 pm[spacer size=”0″]
Lawlers BBQ
One of my first culinary discoveries upon moving to the south was the stuffed baked potato and Lawlers has the best one going. Piping hot and spilling over with butter, cheese, sour cream, and tender, flavorful pulled pork…
Perfect for:
- Grabbing a quick lunch
- Hearty appetites (their standard stuffed baked potato is actually a stuffed potato and a half!)

(New) Greenbriar Bar-B-Que
Greenbriar Bar-B-Que, located just off the 565 (known as the “new” location but owned by the original owners) won my heart over forever and completely with their hushpuppies. Their tender meat and thick, sweet bar-b-que beans just sealed the deal. With a full restaurant, there is plenty of room for a large group to spread out.
Perfect for:
- Dining with a large group
- A leisurely paced meal
