With just a two and a half hour drive from the city of Huntsville, Alabama’s biggest college town is surprisingly full of historical parks and museums.
A belated birthday trip with a friend turned out to be the culture filled goldmine that we were looking for.
Here are three must-see places people can visit to discover another side of T-town.
1. Alabama Natural History Museum
Situated on the University of Alabama’s campus, the Natural History Museum houses a full-scale fossil of the most common prehistoric creature found in Alabama – the Basilosaurus.
The museum also features other artifacts including a replica of the Woolly Mammoth skull and the Sylacauga Meteorite.
Plus, admission is cheap – only $2.
2. Tuscaloosa Museum of Art
In the middle of a dense crop of trees set far back from the road is the Museum of Art.
Housed in an ancient looking Japanese pagoda, the museum has one of the greatest private collections of American Art, which include paintings, sculpture and historical dining room pieces.
The price of admission is also low here, at $8.
3. Moundville Archaeological Park
This park is located about half an hour outside of Tuscaloosa, but it is worth the drive. As the second largest Mississippian culture site in the US, Moundville is an ancient political and ceremonial center marked by platform mounds where structures were built.
Visitors can walk the grounds and visit the on-site museum full of artifacts. General admission is priced at $8.
