Summer Drive-in Movies

Summer Drive-in Movies in Huntsvile

The Return of the Drive-in

As a kid growing up in Chicago, I spent many Saturday evenings at the local drive-in movie theater. Something about eating in the car and being as loud as you want to be was fun! Bouncing around from the front to the back and trying to hang out of the window for a different view was good living to 8 year old me.

The theater also boosted its self as “The world’s largest drive-in Theater” which served as added excitement. As far as I knew, I was living every kid’s dream! Like many things from my youth, the theater would one day close. We were left with a giant flea market which was nice, but not nearly as much fun as the movies, and I would never step foot, (or park), at another drive-in theater again.

Fast forward to 2020 when the world as we know it has completely changed. From the COVID-19 pandemic, changing how we interact socially, to the Black Lives Matter protests and rallies, with everyone fighting for change, we haven’t had much “fun” to look forward to collectively. But because we live in a community with so many forward-thinking, innovative people, Huntsville has found a way to bring back a slice of nostalgia, summer fun, and positive vibes wrapped in the form of the drive-in movies. I’ll highlight who’s doing what, when, and where, you gas up the car and take your pick!

South Huntsville Drive-in Movie Series

More Dates to be Announced

It should come as no surprise that South Huntsville is on this list. The activity and event line up for this area grows yearly and SoHsv residence love it! The South Huntsville Main Business Association debuted Movies in the park last summer so, it seemed natural that they’d look for a way to keep that momentum going this year.

Located in the parking lot off Haysland square, prepare to get there early if you want a good spot and a chance to enjoy the food trucks.

*Tips: Bring lawn chairs and blanket to set out in front of your car. It’s nice to have the option to sit outside if you’re comfortable doing so. Give yourself extra time to purchase food; we almost missed the opening credits.

Lowe Mill Drive-in on the Dock

Lowe Mill Facebook Event
Saturdays parking to begin at 7 PM, screening at 8 PM or sunset

Are you familiar with Concert on the Dock? If not, you should be! Enjoy the same eccentric and artsy vibe we have all come to love from the comfort of your car.

Lowe mill says this will be “a FREE weekly series showcasing obscure live and animated short films as well as episodic classic TV!”

If you’re at all concerned with social distancing, Lowe Mill has that covered. They’re making sure all cars are parked 6 feet apart and even requiring masks should you need to use the restroom. Lowe Mill is also working hard to keep runtime to about an hour to lessen the need for restroom breaks.

Staying true to their creative roots, Lowe Mill is bringing what I feel is the most unique Drive-In movie experience of the bunch.
