South Huntsville’s 14.7-Mile Greenway Loop Is Now Complete

South Huntsville residents and outdoor enthusiasts have a new reason to hit the trails. City leaders officially celebrated the completion of a new 1½-mile Tennessee River Greenway extension that creates a continuous 14.7-mile loop through South Huntsville.

Mayor Tommy Battle joined city officials for a ribbon-cutting ceremony marking the completion of the project, which extends from Redstone Road to Green Cove Road. Construction on the newest section began in September 2025.

The completed loop incorporates portions of the Aldridge Creek Greenway and connects residents and visitors to several of South Huntsville’s most popular destinations, including Ditto Landing and the Tennessee River. The expanded trail system provides a scenic route for walking, running, cycling and enjoying nature while remaining within the city.

Mayor Tommy Battle said Huntsville’s greenway system continues to be an important investment in the community.

“Huntsville’s greenways are a valuable recreation asset to the Huntsville community. Expanding our greenway network is an investment in the health, well-being and quality of life for everyone who visits or calls Huntsville home.”

District 3 Council Member Jennie Robinson said the completed loop has been highly anticipated by South Huntsville residents.

“As we all live our busy lives, it’s truly a luxury to have a robust network of quiet and peaceful greenways winding throughout the city. I know in South Huntsville, completing this loop is something everyone has been looking forward to.”

In addition to providing a peaceful outdoor escape, the expanded greenway offers more opportunities for recreation and exercise. Whether it’s a leisurely walk, an afternoon bike ride or a daily run, the trail is designed to serve residents of all ages and activity levels.

Parks & Recreation Director James Gossett emphasized the importance of creating accessible outdoor spaces for the community.

“Recreation is for everyone. Whether you enjoy a morning walk, a weekend bike ride, a daily run or simply spending time outdoors with family and friends, spaces like this provide opportunities for residents of all ages and abilities to connect with nature and one another.”

With the completion of the 14.7-mile loop, Huntsville continues to expand its network of greenways, offering more ways for residents and visitors to explore the city’s natural beauty while staying active.
