Huntsville is preparing to welcome some of the world’s top adaptive athletes after being selected as the host city for the 2026 UCI Para-cycling Road World Championships.
The international competition will take place September 4-7, 2026, bringing approximately 600 elite para-cyclists, along with coaches, support staff, and family members, to the Rocket City. The event is organized through a partnership between the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) and U.S. Paralympics Cycling.
The championship represents a major milestone for Huntsville, which previously hosted a UCI Para-cycling Road World Cup event in 2023. That competition welcomed athletes from 40 countries and marked the first time a UCI Para-cycling Road World Cup race was held in the United States.
The 2026 event is expected to draw an even larger international field as athletes prepare for the 2028 Paralympic Games in Los Angeles.
Competition will take place throughout Cummings Research Park, where athletes will compete in both time trials and road races. Events will feature a variety of adaptive cycling disciplines, including handcycles, tricycles, tandems, and standard bicycles.
Community leaders and organizers say Huntsville’s successful hosting of previous para-cycling events helped secure the opportunity to bring the World Championships to North Alabama.
The event will be free for spectators to attend, giving residents and visitors the chance to watch some of the world’s best para-cyclists compete on an international stage during Labor Day weekend 2026.
