Caving in Huntsville

By Zenovia Stephens

Go off the grid and explore where only the bravest and most fearless of people dare to venture. Where exactly is that? Only one of the darkest places to exist on Earth, a Cave!

North Alabama is known for many things. We have amazing HikingBeer & Coffee TrailsGeocachingRestaurants, and a growing entertainment scene. It isn’t much you cant do here, and that includes caving.

Whether it’s a show cave or a private cave, which may require a permit, there’s a caving experience nearby suitable for just about everyone.

What is Caving?

Caving, or spelunking, is the act of exploring wild, non-man-made caves. Although it may be tempting, one should not enter a cave without an experienced guide, proper safety equipment, and understanding of associated risks.

Equipment

It doesn’t require a lot to get started, but this isn’t something you should do without the essential recommended gear.

Helmet: Caving can mean tight squeezes, low ceilings, and even falling rocks. Wearing a helmet will help prevent damage in the event any of those occur on your trip.

Head Lamp: Have you ever been to a cave? If not, you should know they are incredibly dark; having ample lighting is a must. There’s no way around it unless you plan to wander aimlessly into the unknown. It would be best if you also had a backup lamp and extra batteries.

Shoes: Caves are typically wet and muddy; good, slip-resistant shoes should be worn to maneuver through the cave safely. For many, that may be a hiking shoe, but rain boots seem to be a great option since they ride up higher.

Socks: All socks are not equal, and in an activity such as caving, you want to be sure to have a quality pair of wool socks to keep your toes warm and dry.

Clothing: Caves are a cool, figuratively and literally. Wearing attire to aid in maintaining one’s body temperature and staying dry is extremely important. Polyester is a good starting option as it has natural water repellant properties.

Snacks: Pack high-energy, high-protein snacks, and be sure to stay hydrated. It’s also a good idea to carry an empty bottle as caves are leave no trace; this includes doing your business!

Risks

All extreme activities come with a set of risks, and caving is no different. Although not typical, caving carries the following risks:

Hypothermia

Drowning

Entrapment

Exhaustion

Many can be prevented with the proper preparation and being aware of one’s limits.
