The 12th Annual Microwave Dave Day will bring local musicians, music lovers, and the Huntsville community together on Sunday, October 18, 2026, for an afternoon of live music, memories, and celebration.
This year’s event will be held from 3–9 p.m. at Butler Green at Campus 805, continuing a beloved Huntsville tradition that means a little more this year.
For the first time since the event began, Microwave Dave Day will take place without the man who inspired it.
Huntsville lost legendary blues musician Microwave Dave Gallaher in February 2026. While his absence will certainly be felt, the annual celebration offers an opportunity to honor his extraordinary contributions to Huntsville’s music community and ensure that his passion for music education continues to inspire future generations.
A Day Dedicated to Music and Community
Microwave Dave Day has been bringing the Huntsville community together since 2015, when Mayor Tommy Battle officially proclaimed June 28 as Microwave Dave Day in recognition of Gallaher’s musical, educational, and charitable contributions.
What began as a celebration of one musician quickly grew into an annual tradition supporting a much larger mission.
The event benefits the Microwave Dave Music Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to enriching lives through music education and creating opportunities for young musicians throughout North Alabama.
The 12th annual celebration will feature an all-star lineup of Huntsville musicians performing throughout the afternoon and evening.
One particularly meaningful change this year is the inclusion of youth performers on the main stage alongside established musicians. In previous years, student performances were held on a separate stage.
It’s a fitting tribute to a man who believed so deeply in the power of introducing young people to live music.
More Than a Musician
For decades, Microwave Dave was one of the most recognizable figures in Huntsville’s music scene.
As the frontman of Microwave Dave and The Nukes, Gallaher brought his signature blues sound to audiences locally and internationally. But his impact extended far beyond the stage.
Dave was a passionate advocate for music education, regularly visiting classrooms and introducing students to the joy of live performance.
His dedication was rooted in his own childhood experience. As a fourth grader, Dave attended a school assembly featuring a live jazz band. That single performance sparked a lifelong love of music and helped shape the musician he would become.
Years later, he worked to provide that same experience for children throughout North Alabama.
Today, the Microwave Dave Music Foundation continues that mission through educational programming, including its Concerts in the Classroom initiative.
Earlier this year, the Foundation also embraced a shortened name, transitioning publicly from the Microwave Dave Music Education Foundation to the Microwave Dave Music Foundation.
While the name may be a little shorter, the mission remains unchanged.
Keeping the Music Playing
Microwave Dave’s influence can be found throughout Huntsville, from the musicians he inspired to the students who experienced their first live blues performance because of his work.
Earlier this year, the community gathered to celebrate his life, and a mural honoring Dave was dedicated at The Lumberyard on Microwave Dave Way.
Now, Microwave Dave Day provides another opportunity to celebrate his legacy in perhaps the most appropriate way possible: through music.
The event is also a reminder that the Foundation’s work continues. Every classroom performance, every young musician given an opportunity, and every person introduced to the joy of music helps carry forward the mission Dave spent so many years championing.
For longtime fans, this year’s celebration will be an opportunity to remember a friend and a Huntsville icon. For younger musicians, it represents the opportunity to become part of the musical community he helped build.
And for Huntsville, it’s a chance to come together and celebrate someone who gave so much to the city.
