Southern Kitchen and Home Brings Southern Makers, Food and Community Together at Stovehouse
Southern Kitchen and Home has a new, larger home at Stovehouse. After originally opening in Gaslight Alley in November 2024, the locally owned business has moved into the former Brewers Cooperative location, giving owner Tonya Ross more room to grow the store’s mix of Southern goods, local food, classes and community experiences.
Southern Kitchen and Home is more than a place to shop for kitchen goods and gifts. The store was created around a love for small businesses, Southern makers and good food, with a goal of bringing people together along the way.
From locally made products and grab-and-go meals to classes and a food and farm pickup hub, Southern Kitchen and Home gives shoppers plenty of ways to discover the people and businesses behind the products they bring home.
A Dream More Than 20 Years in the Making
For owner and founder Tonya Ross, Southern Kitchen and Home is the realization of an idea that began more than two decades ago.
Originally from Atlanta, Tonya spent 20 years as an Army wife before her family retired and moved to Alabama in 2008. But the idea for her own store started much earlier.
While in college, she wrote a business plan inspired by the types of businesses she loved visiting throughout the South. During her family’s travels, she was always drawn to unique Southern goods, particularly food and items for the kitchen.
The dream of opening a store stuck with her. Years later, as an empty nester, Tonya decided it was finally time to revisit that longtime dream and explore a new chapter for herself.
Shopping Small, All in One Place
Supporting small businesses isn’t just part of Southern Kitchen and Home’s inventory. It’s at the center of the entire concept.
The store focuses on kitchen and home goods from small businesses throughout the South, with a particular emphasis on supporting local makers, bakers and farmers.
Customers can shop for unique products and gifts while discovering brands they might not otherwise encounter. Southern Kitchen and Home also plans to share vendor stories, giving shoppers a closer look at how the makers and businesses represented in the store got their start.
“Everyone has a story,” Tonya shared. “We are more than just a place to find unique goods and gifts, we are building a community.”
Food, Classes and Local Connections
That community focus extends beyond the retail shelves.
Southern Kitchen and Home serves as a pickup location for the Huntsville Food and Farm Hub, connecting customers with local food and agriculture.
The store also has a commissary kitchen used by bakers and caterers who provide homemade grab-and-go meals, foods and treats. It’s an easy way for shoppers to pick up something prepared locally while supporting another small business.
Classes are another important part of the Southern Kitchen and Home experience. Makers, bakers, farmers and chefs are invited to share their skills and knowledge through classes designed to bring people together.
It’s a concept that reflects what Tonya has enjoyed most about doing business in Huntsville. Since moving to the area in 2008, she has watched Huntsville transform and welcome people from across the country. She describes the growing community as a melting pot and says the response to Southern Kitchen and Home has been encouraging from the beginning.
Southern Small Businesses, Delivered
Southern Kitchen and Home is also expanding beyond its Huntsville storefront with a new subscription service.
The subscription boxes will bring products from Southern small businesses directly to customers’ doorsteps worldwide, introducing subscribers to brands they may not have discovered before.
With the holidays approaching, the boxes can also serve as a gift for friends and family who love Southern products, food and discovering new small businesses.
