Microwave Dave’s Legacy Lives On Through Music
For years, the Microwave Dave Music Education Foundation has worked to connect young people across North Alabama with the joy and power of music. Now, the organization is stepping into a new chapter with a familiar, simplified name: the Microwave Dave Music Foundation.
While the Foundation’s legal name remains the Microwave Dave Music Education Foundation, the shorter name is one the community has already been using for years.
“Our full legal name is the Microwave Dave Music Education Foundation, but it’s a mouthful, and people naturally shortened it,” the Foundation shared. “As we started thinking about the future of the Foundation, it felt like the right time to embrace the name our community was already using.”
More than simply making the name easier to say, the shift reflects an organization looking toward the future while remaining rooted in the legacy of Microwave Dave Gallaher.
Keeping Dave’s Legacy at the Heart of the Mission
Music education will remain central to the Foundation, but its work is ultimately about something even bigger: carrying forward Dave’s belief in the power of music and making it accessible to more people.
Accessibility was an important part of who Dave was as a musician and member of the Huntsville community. He was generous with both his time and talent and had a remarkable ability to connect with people through music.
That spirit continues to guide the Foundation today.
The goal is to make sure young people throughout North Alabama have opportunities to hear live music, learn an instrument and discover what music can mean in their own lives – regardless of their family’s ability to afford lessons or the resources available at their school.
“The best way we know to honor Dave is to keep doing that work and to introduce new generations to the joy of music.”
Bringing Music Directly to North Alabama Students
Today, the Microwave Dave Music Foundation’s mission is to inspire young people to explore and appreciate music while empowering them to become active participants in their local music community.
Two primary programs are helping make that mission possible.
Concerts in the Classroom brings professional musicians directly into local schools, allowing students to experience live music in a familiar environment. For some children, the program provides their very first opportunity to see musicians perform live.
The Danny Hall Memorial Music Scholarship helps students in Kindergarten through 12th grade pursue music instruction when they might not otherwise have the financial resources to do so.
Both programs are designed to create an early connection with music – giving young people the chance to experience it, explore it and potentially discover something they will carry with them throughout their lives.
Looking Ahead to the Next 10 Years
As the Microwave Dave Music Foundation enters this next chapter, one of its biggest priorities is expanding its reach throughout North Alabama.
The Foundation hopes to bring Concerts in the Classroom into more schools, particularly those where students have fewer opportunities to experience live music. There are also plans to continue growing the Danny Hall Memorial Music Scholarship and explore additional ways to remove barriers to music education.
It’s a moment that brings the organization’s past and future together.
More than a decade ago, Dave’s friends came together with an idea to celebrate him and the impact he was already having on the community. With the work of the Foundation’s original founders and Board of Directors, that idea grew into an organization capable of introducing thousands of young people to music.
Now, its leaders are thinking about what the next decade could look like.
“We want to be thoughtful about that growth, make sure it’s sustainable, and that we stay connected to the reason the Foundation was created in the first place.”
Microwave Dave Day Returns October 18
That connection between music and community will be especially meaningful at this year’s Microwave Dave Day.
The annual event returns Sunday, October 18, from 3–9 p.m. at Butler Green at Campus 805.
This will be the first Microwave Dave Day without Dave, making this year’s gathering particularly poignant for the musicians, friends and community members who knew and loved him.
While the day may feel different, its heart remains the same: great music, community and support for music education.
Attendees can expect a lineup of local musicians performing throughout the day, along with one exciting change for 2026. This year, youth performers will take the main stage alongside the rest of the lineup rather than performing on a separate stage.
The change gives the Foundation an opportunity to put talented young musicians at the center of the celebration — a fitting reflection of its mission and the future Dave helped inspire.
Microwave Dave Day is also the Foundation’s largest fundraiser of the year. Money raised through the event directly supports programs that give young people opportunities to experience music and become part of North Alabama’s music community.
How to Support the Microwave Dave Music Foundation
As the Foundation grows, there are plenty of ways for the community to grow alongside it.
Supporters can attend Microwave Dave Day and other Foundation events, donate, volunteer or simply help spread the word about its programs. Volunteers are currently needed for the 2026 Microwave Dave Day.
The Foundation is also interested in developing relationships with local businesses, organizations, musicians and community members who share its belief that music should be accessible to everyone.
And you certainly don’t have to know how to play an instrument to get involved.
“If you believe in the power of music and want to help us share that experience with others, there’s a place for you in the Foundation.”
As the Microwave Dave Music Foundation looks toward its next decade, its name may be a little shorter, but the purpose behind it remains strong: honor Dave’s legacy by making music accessible, creating opportunities for young people and helping the next generation discover the same joy in music that he spent a lifetime sharing with Huntsville and North Alabama.
