Alabama’s eighth annual sales tax holiday for school-related items begins at 12:01 a.m. Friday, Aug. 2, 2013, and ends at midnight Sunday Aug. 4, 2013, giving shoppers the opportunity to purchase certain school supplies, computers, books and clothing free of sales or use tax.

FREE Art Receptions and Artist Market

Friday night artist market features art vendors, open artist studios and independent shops, hallway demonstrations and performance, relaxed open houses and a strong sense of community and connectedness. Athens Kiddie Carnival
@ Forrest & Beaty Streets in Athens, Friday & Saturday 6:30-9:30pm
This is the last weekend for the Athens Lions Club Kiddie Carnival! Don’t miss out on this summertime festival with rides for kids along with great concessions and bingo! Rides include a small Ferris wheel, rocket ships, carousel, cars, train, roller coaster, and the scrambler. Concessions are available and are very reasonably priced. Each ride is just one ticket, which is 50 cents, with free admission. The Kiddie Carnival has provided family fun for kids and their families for several generations. Spring Awakening presented by Renaissance Theatre

Spring Awakening is a rock musical based on the controversial German play Spring Awakening (1891) by Frank Wedkind. The musical tells the story of teenagers discovering the inner and outer tumult of sexuality and other life experiences. The original Broadway production of Spring Awakening won 8 Tony Awards in 2007, including Best Musical, Book, and Score.

Memories of World War II: Photography from the Archives of the Associated Press
@ Huntsville Museum of Art, Saturday 11-4pm (exhibited Aug 3- Sept 29)
This moving exhibition features more than 100 black-and-white photographic selections of all theaters of war and the home front. The works were selected from the AP’s collection of more than 100,000 WWII images taken by staff and U.S. Armed Forces photographers. It showcases photographs from archives in London, Paris, Frankfurt and Tokyo, many of which have not been seen since the war. Read more about Memories of World War II.
