Working towards “a strongly desired goal or purpose.” That is just one of the definitions Merriam-Webster uses to describe the word Dream. This author can only wonder if the owners of Peppered Pig had such dreams when they decided to move from a well-established food truck to a brick and mortar restaurant earlier this spring in Jones Valley. Was the time right? Was the location right? Did the past ten years of owning and operating this food truck finally lend itself to a more permanent home? I stopped by recently to find out.
Pulling into the parking lot just after 11:15am, the line was out the door – a good sign in my opinion. As I opened the door and the smell of good food hit me, I was handed a menu by the person in front of me. I proceeded to read the menu and soon discovered that I was going to have a difficult time just choosing one thing. Every burger, every sandwich, and yes, even every salad sounded like they would send me home happy.
As I got to the counter, I decided to order a few items – the WN bbq Sandwich, Cheesy Fries, and the seasonal Fried Pie. I then took a seat at the bar where I was promptly greeted with a warm smile. For as busy as the place was, the food arrived quickly. The WN bbq Sandwich consisted of cherry wood smoked pulled pork, hickory smoked beef brisket, sweet and spicy pickles, thinly sliced white onions, bbq sauce, all served on a butter toasted roll. This sandwich ALONE was enough to fill one’s tummy; it was huge! My favorite part was the pulled pork by far. For the Cheesy Fries, these crinkle cut beauties came with shredded Swiss and Colby cheeses, plus house made mac & cheese. Served warm, this dish was delightful.
Surprisingly though, it was the seasonal Fried Pie that made me jump out of my chair and do a happy dance. Served in an empanada like pastry shell, the flavor of the week was peach. With the vanilla glaze on top and the warm peach filling inside the pastry, I can describe the dessert as one that is mouthwatering, leaving you with a need for more.
As I finished my meal, I took a moment to take it all in. What I heard was laughter from numerous tables, and what I saw was people of all types – those in suits, shorts, young and old. I think that says a lot about an establishment. When you can walk in and be recognized as one of the regulars but even when you aren’t – quickly become one.
In the end, Peppered Pig let me fulfill my favorite Merriam-Webster dream definition, “something that fully satisfies a wish,” as I left with a full stomach and happy heart.
