St. Patrick’s Day is a fun holiday and there is certainly no shortage of things to do if your idea of a good time for the evening involves green beer, but what if you have your kids in tow? I think St. Patrick’s Day can be just as fun with the kids, maybe even MORE FUN!
St. Patrick’s Day Parade
Saturday, March 16th at 11:30am in downtown Huntsville you can find the 36th Annual Ellen McAnelly Memorial St. Patrick’s Day Parade. It’s a celebration of Irish Culture and Heritage in what I have been assured by the parade committee is a family friendly environment.
To make this more fun for the kids consider buying some green beads, green temporary hairspray, etc. at your local Party City, or visit Hair Holiday at Parkway Place Mall for the green wig featured here! The kids will love dressing up for St. Patrick’s Day in more than just the “don’t pinch me” green.
Magically Delicious
After the St. Patrick’s Day Parade stop by Big Spring Park and feed the ducks and fish something a little more exciting than the standard loaf of bread. How about you take them Lucky Charms and provide our feathered and finned friends with a magically delicious treat…
Shamrock Shake
On the way home you can stop by one of Huntsville’s many fine establishments for a Green Shake.
Here are some of my favorites:
- Crème de Menthe Shake at Cheeburger Cheeburger (personal favorite)
- Mint Brownie Milkshake at Red Robin
- Shamrock Shake at McDonald’s
For added excitement make your own green shake or green sugar cookies by letting the kids add a drop of green food coloring to your regular recipes themselves. [spacer size=”0″]

Actually, it’s not a good idea to take Lucky Charms to feed the ducks. If you’ll notice the next time your at Big Spring Park, they have seed dispensers for something to feed the ducks, with signs asking not to throw bread and other stuff in the water. All that sugar and yeast and additives and other gunk is not good for the water or the fish.
