Nestled in a quiet neighborhood in South Huntsville, Weatherly Heights Elementary has been serving Huntsville for many decades. But this weekend, Weatherly Heights is doing something it’s never done before: hosting the Roadrunner 5K, a community race. Weatherly Heights Parent and Race Director Kristin Scroggin thought a 5K race would be a fitting fundraiser for the school, whose mascot is a Roadrunner and whose slogan is “we go the extra mile”.
As Kristin points out, “The South Huntsville community has a very active running community and this was a way for the community to support the school and be active”.
Kristin hopes the Roadrunner 5K will become an annual event that runners and walkers look forward to every year.
The Cause:
While finishing a 5K is always an accomplishment, participants in the Roadrunner 5K can take extra satisfaction in knowing that race proceeds will benefit a great cause.
Race officials explain that, “All proceeds will go to the Weatherly Heights PTA which provides school supplies, technologies and resources for teachers at the school. They also use the funds to put together outreach events that encourage the students and parents of the school to come together”.
While competitors are doing something good for themselves, they’ll also be supporting the education of area children.
The Course
The race route is an easy 5K (3.1 miles) loop that winds through residential South Huntsville. Other than a short climb on Edgehill Drive, about 2 miles in, the course is mostly flat. Race Director Kristin Scroggin describes the course as “a GREAT first race for anyone wanting to cross something off their bucket list!”
Whether you’re out to set a PR, or are interested in walking the course, participants of all speeds are welcome. Race officials want to remind participants to organize themselves at the starting line according to race pace – faster runners towards the front, walkers towards the rear.
The course is USATF certified, meaning that it has been measured and certified by USA Track & Field. Water will be provided along the course.
