Time to Get Outside
My family and I typically spend a lot of time outside wondering around the city for new and exciting activities. Although my kids seem to understand what’s going on, it definitely isn’t easy keeping them inside, away from friends and away from the active lifestyle they’re used to living.
The question of “Where are we going today?” has finally started to slow down but the desire and need to do “something” remains; so I find myself constantly thinking of ways to ease the situation we’re living through and hopefully provide them with a taste of how life was just a few short months ago.
Under normal circumstances, Huntsville is booming with events and activities. It’s to the point that we almost always roll into the weekend with a list of things we want to do only to run out time trying it all. With the restrictions and safety precautions being taken right now, everything is different, events are limited and the ones taking place do not look a the way they did in the past.
If you are in need of some fresh ideas and things you can do, regardless of experiencing a pandemic or not, check out these fun scavenger hunts.
Lucky Duck Scavenger Hunt
This scavenger hunt is fun because it allows you to explore downtown Huntsville and maybe even learn a thing or two. We love this right now because 1) its outdoors and 2) it allows us to maintain much more than the recommended 6ft distance from others. In my book, that’s a huge plus!
The Huntsville Madison County Convention and Business Bureau has 14 bronze ducks hidden in some really cool and unique places. So unique, we couldn’t find them all in one trip. But the fun we had trying was just what we needed for a change of pace.
My boys enjoyed running around, looking over, under and everywhere they could in search of these prized ducks! Each one found was like gold; they jumped and shouted for joy while demanding that I quickly read the next clue so they could continue their hunt.
Grab your phone and download a virtual clue card. Be sure to return to the Convention center for a prize once all the ducks are found!
Purple Cup Secret Art Walk
Arts Huntsville normally hosts guided tours for the secret art walk but this can easily be done on your own. All you have to do is stroll through downtown keeping your eyes peeled for….. Art!
I’ve gone on the guided tour before and was really amazed at all the hidden gems we have downtown! There are 13 stops featured on the walk and it takes you through spaces you probably wouldn’t think to check out on your own.
We love that this walk not only gets you active and exploring, but it also sparks conversation and get’s the imagination of little ones going. My kids loved seeing all the colorful murals and enjoyed imagining themselves as part each one we found!

Bonus
While we haven’t had the chance to visit yet, Trains on Main is another great scavenger hunt in Madison. Similar to The Lucky Duck Hunt, you’re on the search for bronze trains while exploring and learning about downtown Madison.
I encourage you to get outside as much as possible during these times. Connecting to nature is healing and beneficial to your well-being.
