You think you know Snow White? The apple, the pale girl with the high pitched voice
This February Fantasy Playhouse is bringing a world premiere play to life in Huntsville – Snow White and the 7 Littles.
Local Playwright Stephen Tyler Davis has taken the old, tired story of Snow White and updated it for modern audiences to enjoy.
As one of the actors in the show (watch for me as the evil Queen Whiteheart), I’m here to give you the scoop before the show premieres.
7 Things to Know about Snow White
The show is not just for kids!
1 – See Yourself Onstage
Theatre (and acting in general) isn’t exactly known as the most inclusive place, but Fantasy wants to change that.
I am HERE FOR IT! Not only will you see actors of all shapes, sizes, colors, and abilities on the stage but these differences are CELEBRATED!
2- World Premiere
Do you like to be first? This show is for you.
It has never been seen ANYWHERE!
Huntsville will be the world premiere. That means you get the chance to see this show before anyone else in the world.
This experience is typically reserved for bigger cities like New York, Chicago, Atlanta. But not this February.
3 – Fun for Adults too
Don’t let the name Fantasy Playhouse Children’s Theatre fool you. Adults will find plenty of humor in Tyler’s clever script.
Even at the first read-through, his dialogue had me laughing out loud more times than I can count.
Not to mention the gorgeous costumes, outstanding hair and makeup and out of this world set.
4 – New and Improved Heroine
You think you know Snow White? The pretty, pale girl with the high pitched voice who needs a prince and a kiss to save her?
Not anymore!
Fantasy’s Snow is a civil engineer on a mission to save her village by providing clean water. No prince needed here.
As the mom to both a little girl and boy, this is the kind of story I can get behind.
5 – No Dwarfs
I think we can all agree the whole dwarf troupe is outdated. So how do you put on Snow White without the dwarfs? Enter the Little family.
Tyler has transformed this tired cliché into a family of 7 brothers and sisters who are all a little too much for their community.
If you’ve ever felt like you don’t belong, then you’ll feel right at home with the littles.
Spoiler – In true fairytale fashion it is these very differences that will save the day. Another message I love.
6- Hometown Author
This world-premiere play was written by Huntsville native, Stephen Tyler Davis. And this isn’t his first (or last) play.
He has quite the resume – having worked professionally in New York City as a stage director, writer, producer, performer, and theatre educator. More Details
7 – Sensory-Friendly Show
Sensory processing issues shouldn’t prevent a child from enjoying live theatre.
Fantasy created a program that makes space for audiences with special access needs.
The 10am show on Saturday February 18th will have several changes to make audience members more comfortable during the show including:
- lowered visual and sound cues
- fidget toys and other sensory assistance tools available to borrow
- house lights remain on low during the show
If you’ve ever been afraid to take your child to a show because you aren’t sure how they’ll react then the sensory-friendly shows are perfect for you.
I would also recommend this performance if you have younger children you’d like to introduce to the magic of theatre. In another year or so, it’s how I plan to bring my youngest child to his first show.
Snow White and the 7 Littles is a show with real heart. With a message of inclusion and community that we truly need today. If you’re looking for an uplifting and fun time, then get your tickets now.
