It’s that time of year again. The month that’s hard to spell and may or may not have an extra day.
We’ve selected a list of events to fill your social calendar. Remember, this is only a small portion of what’s on our calendar, so be sure and check there for even more things to do in February.

1. Greater Huntsville Humane Society Dog Ball

February 3

Benefits the Greater Huntsville Humane Society (GHHS). Guests will enjoy cocktails, dinner, and auction. Fifty of the area’s “Very Important Dogs,” several shelter dogs and 5 of the community’s exceptional “Working Dogs” will be featured.


2. The Lion King Jr. presented by  The Academy for Academics & Arts Theatre

February 3 – 5 & 10 – 12

A Junior version of the hit Broadway musical: Disney’s The Lion King. Performed by rising local talent. Tickets are $12 for adults and $8 for students.


3. Ars Nova presents Puccini’s La Boheme

February 3 – 5

This passionate, timeless story of love and loss among poor young artists, told through Puccini’s lush score with glorious arias, is among the world’s most popular operas. Tickets: $20-$30.

4. Family Concert COMPOSE YOURSELF by Huntsville Symphony Orchestra

February 4

Compose Yourself is a unique and interactive show for young audiences, “the perfect blend of education and entertainment,” and introduces children of all ages to the instruments of the orchestra.

6. Battle of the Food Trucks All-Star Selection

February 9

Food trucks will compete at Yellowhammer Brewery, for a spot in the 2017 Battle of the Food Truck event.


7. Huntsville Comic Convention

February 10 -11

This event spotlights comic books and geek culture and will welcome many guests from a wide range of popular culture genres.  $10 per day or $15 for a two-day pass.

8. Once Upon a Winter’s Night

February 10

Dust off your wands, air out your capes, and exercise your wings because a magical evening is coming to the Madison Public Library (MPL). Children, teens and adults are invited to celebrate fairytales through puppet shows, games, dancing, crafts, music, and more.


9. Independent Musical Productions presents Nunsense!

February 10 – 12 & 16  – 18

Nunsense is a hilarious talent show staged by five survivors at the Little Sisters of Hoboken nunnery. The score pulses with merriment and an unabashed desire to make you laugh. Tickets $20-$25.


10. Riverdance presented by Broadway Theatre League

February 10 – 12

The international Irish dance phenomenon is back by popular demand in Riverdance – The 20th Anniversary World Tour. Tickets start at $29.


11. Underground Railroad: Journey to Freedom at Burritt on the Mountain

February 11

The Underground Railroad had no tracks or train cars, but it moved thousands of slaves from the South to freedom. Experience following the clues from one “safe” house to next in our simulation. The entire program takes approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes. Included with regular admission.


12. Pour Your Heart Out

February 11

Celebrate with an evening of food, drink and live music in the Davidson Center for Space Exploration, then step outside where  Sloss Furnaces will help you create your own Valentine keepsake. $90-couple (non-museum member) and $45 – individual (non-museum member).


13. Cabaret Upstairs: Celebrating Black Musicals

February 12

Independent Musical Productions has partnered with Amendment XXI to add these special cabaret performances. Your ticket includes admission to the show of your choosing along with an appetizer and a dessert. Tickets start at $27.


14. Symphonies on the Side: Dinner in the Grand Hall at EARLYWORKS presented by Huntsville Symphony Orchestra

The HSO invites you to attend a Sunday evening fête featuring memorable music and a sumptuous meal. Seating is limited, so reserve your place in advance, and come for a dinner experience you’ll not soon forget. Tickets are $70.


15. The Great Backyard Bird Count at Huntsville Botanical Garden

February 17

The Great Backyard Bird Count is an annual four-day event that engages bird watchers of all ages in counting birds to create a real-time snapshot of where the birds are across the continent. Anyone can participate, from beginning bird watchers to experts.

February 18

A free gaming and technology expo, ChargerCon features video game and tabletop tournaments, cosplay contest, workshops, demos, a retro arcade, and free play areas for PC, console, tabletop, and handheld games.


17. Free 2 Teach Paper Chase 5K Race

February 18

Race proceeds benefit Free 2 Teach, a local nonprofit that operates a free resource store stocked with teaching materials and student supplies, funded and donated by the community. $30 to run.


18. Wagner Without Words presented by Huntsville Symphony Orchestra

February 18

Experience the richness, energy, and pathos of Wagner at his finest in this engaging compilation of the best orchestral melodies from the epic cycle The Ring of the Nibelung, presented by the orchestra without vocalists.


19. Neighborhood Earth

Opens February 20

Neighborhood Earth transports visitors to the surface of our closest planetary neighbors with cutting-edge cinematic techniques and projection technologies. Neighborhood Earth incorporates artifacts from the U.S. Space & Rocket Center vaults to tell the stories behind mankind’s exploration of the universe.


20. Fantasy Playhouse Children’s Theater Presents: Miss Nelson Is Missing!

February 24 – 26, March 3 – 5

Miss Nelson can’t control her crazy classroom because she’s just too nice. But when she disappears, her replacement is the hard-as-nails, detention-loving, recess-canceling, homework-overloading substitute teacher Viola Swamp! Tickets $15.


21. YAM 2017: Exhibition for Youth Art Month

Opens February 26

This year marks the 30th annual Youth Art Month (YAM) exhibition of student artwork on view in the Adtran, Jurenko, Thurber, and Women’s Guild Galleries of Huntsville Museum of Art.
